Freshwater pearls are not only known for being the only gem created by a living creature, but have a long and fascinating history. Also known as the "Queen of Gems" freshwater pearls have been coveted for there beauty and rarity. They can be found in almost every civilization from the America's and Europe to the coasts of Asia. Freshwater pearls are widely known for their variety in shapes and sizes. They are formed in mussels much like saltwater pearls are formed in oysters. The size, color and shape are dependent on the species of mollusks, environment and time.
