How to Open & Close a Jumpring

When you're making beaded jewelry, jump rings can come in very handy--they allow you to attach a metal loop to any part of the necklace, bracelet or earrings so that a clasp can be connected or a pendant or some other embellishment can be added.This basic but important skill will ensure your jewelry designs maintain proper function and look professional as well. The goal is to keep the jump rings shape, close it with the tightest gap possible and maintain its strength.

Step 1: Hold a loop or jump ring with two pairs of chain nose pliers or chain nose and a flat nose pliers.


Step 2: To open the loop or jump ring, bring the tips of one pair of pliers toward you and push the tips of the other pair away.


Step 3:Reverse the steps to close the loop or jump ring. It is best to go a little further than the connection and back. It will almost snap into place.
